Some Highlights Along The Way
Monsal Head
Riding towards Monsal Head from Bakewell is undoubtedly pretty but you aren’t prepared for the sights ahead of you as you turn into the car park. Among the many highlights of this stunning region is the majestic Monsal Head Hotel and its viewpoint, with the winding River Wye below. This iconic spot provides an unforgettable backdrop of lush greenery, dramatic rock formations, and the historic Monsal Viaduct. More importantly, you can practically count on finding the ice cream van at the car park pretty much any time, any day.
Winnats Pass
This road winding through tall peaks and layers of limestone rock is a must-ride. Carved by centuries of geological forces, the Winnats Pass cuts through towering grassy peaks, creating a breathtaking natural amphitheater of rock formations. Its name comes from ‘Windy Gates’ due to the swirling winds that can be experienced throughout the pass.
Snake Pass
Cutting through the heart of the Peak District National Park is the Snake Pass. Named for its serpentine twists and turns, this iconic route winds its way through dramatic landscapes, with steep gradients and sharp bends that demand both skill and concentration from riders. As you navigate the challenging terrain, you'll be rewarded with sweeping views of rolling hills, lush valleys, and rugged moorlands stretching far into the distance.
Something to keep in mind is the near-universal 50mph (80kmh) speed limit. You won’t be able to carve these mountain roads as fast as you might like to, but the slower pace lets you take it all in.
